WANGANUI GAREISON BAND. En route, to the band contest at Ballarat, the Wanganui Garrison Band gave a very fine display, of. its process at the .Town Hall last evening.. There was a fair attendance of ; the public, and. among fcho audience were a number of local bandsmen, who, had come, to study. the work: of the crack Wanganui :band.. The programme was an exacting one, but the band did it ample justice. Its opening number ; was the favourite overture to the "Bohemian Girl." .'■ Then followed a selection from Bellini's "Beafrico de Tenda." Two pleasing- numbers were the overture, "Le'Diadem"" (Hermann),' and a . fantasia, "Old . Favourites" (an arrangement by Eimmer). The outstanding items,, however, were.'.the band's "own. choice" selection, ;an arrangement' by; Owen, of Wagner's' astonishingly difficult "Ride, .of the . Valkyries"—an ambitious effort, coinniendably .accomplished. ' . The band also played the test piece for the championship contest',,at Ballarat,; a selection from Weber's works reprcsentafive of the composer's "Der Frcischutz," "Obe'ron," "Euryanthe," "Preciosa," and the "Benedictus"' from the' Mass in"G; Other items included" a■• cornet solo, "Litania," by Bandmaster Lieutenant' Buckley, who added Giordani's "Caro Mio Bien". as an encore, and an" amus-' ing recitation by. Mr. Muir; The . conr eluding 'number was an imposing fantasia on "Maritana" (Wallace)'. Mr. A. Wadeconducted. ■■'.' - :
