.THE .'MAORI'S .-NEW TURBINE. Considerable . interest is . being taken inthe proposed visit of the. Maori to Port Chalmers- to-day... White at the southeri' port the vessel will undergo an extensive overhaul,--tho. principal incident in con-' nectipn therewith being the installation of her new', hgh-prcssuro turbine. Generally speaking it has- been considered . that, somewhere, the Maori's .propelling machinery is not working economically, and the now turbine will, it is expected, make an improvement. . This new', machine is somewhat longer thn'ir :tliat -which it is replacing, providing two- more expansions of steam. It is also of a larger diameter, and will consequently derive more power from the steam than the one. now in use. Whether this gain, in the >ay indicated, will involve'a corresponding decrease in the twin low-prossurc turbines, into which the eteam'passes from.the high-power turbine, is a. matter of conjecture, at. present. This alteration of tho machinery in the Maori is causing a great deal of-inter-est in engineering and shipping circles, and is being regarded more or less as a kind of test case. The new turbine weighs 16 urne, and cannot ho installed in parts, as tho multitudinous blades on the rotor would probably be damaged' if it-wero ■lifted and lowered by itself, and, cousoi ouently, this .exchange of turbines will bo an operation that will require the close attention of engineers. The tusk of lining tho new turbine and the propeller shaft will'also-involve Some :vcry neat fitting. It is expected that the Maori- will,bo absent from Wellington for fully two weeks or moro.
