DEARTH OF LABOUR.
, A MINISTER'S EXPLANATION.
"I am- informed that settlers in the vicinity have been offering 10s. per day for labourers and this has probably ac T counted for the scarcity," says the Minister for Public Works in explaining to Mr/E. B. Boss, M.P. for Pahiahia, the cause of delay in prosecuting road formation works in the Kumeti Block.- Two of the co-operative gangs, adds the Minister, had abandoned their contracts and the work-had to be completed by day labour.' The district engineer was endeavouring to obtain a number df suitable men in : Wellington and every endeavour was being made to expedite the work, but the trouble was the dearth* of labour through the high: rate of wages offered by. settlers inducing the men to abandon their con--tracts. Work on. the Manawatu Gorge Eoad has also-been delayed owing to the scarcity- of .men.--' :
