The Achilles filly, • Pierene, covered herself vvith glory by her exceptionally fine effort- in the' Stakes/ ' and Tribulation's' decisive win ■in the Hack Race has installed'him. in the position of favourite for . the Guineas' to-dajv. The starting was very- gooid, and; in. this department, . Mr.H; Piper • has seldom excelled' his work "to-day. Another • commendable, feature was the starting, time, which was generally observed throughout. • - -
Very .few people were. present "at the 1 commencement of the racing, and very little money was speculated on the first race.. There was no delay at the barrier, and Captain Jingle jumped off first, but Sleacombe immediately displaced .him, and went past the stand inthe-lead.;. 'At the next fence, he unseated Paramore, leaving Captain Jingl© in the lead. With five furlongs; to go, Centaur toofc. charge, and was, not: again.-headed. .
