STRANGE AND BEAUTIFUL.

THE RIBBON PISH. A very remarkableJooking-fish has been, received ,at the Dominion' Museunt as'a gift to the Philosophical Society 'from Mr. Kingsley', of Nelson/vlt is : probably! an immature "specimen of "the ribbon fish, and was obtained by Mr. Kingsley from a person .who found it on the beach near Nelson. ' It somewhat resembles one which was found about. 18 months ago by .'Messrs.. Parker and Jamiesou, near Collingwdod, and is now in! the .Dominion "Museum: It is, however, larger and .of more extra-' ordinary character. The body is about 21 inches long, and three : inches deep at the' deepest part, while its, greatest, thick-, ness is about half an inch. The head is largo and blunt; with the large-eyes which are'characteristic of deep-sea fishes'. Head. \and_ body are .of a bright silvery' colour, -. with black"' markings.' The tail is probably somewhat injured, and does not present the. extraordinary fih-rays which were a feature of the - previous specimen. The fin on the upper part of the head, in front of the ordinary doisal fin, is of very great interest.. It measures nearly, twice the length of the wjhole' fish, aiia from it there - proceed long :• threads, or filaments, which, when the fish was. alive, and swimming, must have trailed about it in a very beautiful manner. ...They; are from 2ft. Gin. to 3ft. long. In common with the fins, they 'wero probably pink in colour, with black spots,: but when this specimen reached the museum, none of the pink was', left. The .fish-has also two simple ventral fins." {■ . 'v, '

■ A few specimens similar to this one havo been found, and names have been given to them, but Mr. A. ; Hamilton, director of the museum, thinks/they arc simply immature, forms, of the great ribbon, fish, which ■ sometimes : attains s, a length of 25 or 80 feet, and is not uncommon off some parts of the New Zealand coast. Nearly all the forms, including; the adult, tire of a bright silvery ■colour, irregularly .spotted with.; black or, grey marks.' The specimen, which reached the museum last year was extremely, well preserved. An excellent coloured; sketch of it ' may _be seen there, and it is the director's intention to. have a sketch or a model made of the new one; .
