. The :-. "Standard's" . ■ New ■;. York spondent describes- the raid .on the Narragansett Club.'' Ho. says the raid.was made' by a party of reformers, headed :by a newly-created, constable,, one J. G. Cross. AlL ; the' gambling paraphernalia •was taken away to the place of concealment by the club employees. When the deputies entjßred play was in full .'operation amid,a scene of great brilliance. '.'.All the men were in evening clothes,, and the.women were handsomely gowned, displaying fortunes (in jewellery. When the wotaen realised that they were arrested, they' were : seized with panic. They shouted, screamed, and. begged to bo allowed to go.: But Cross was adam, aiit. Ho insisted that all should remain until he \ had taken, their namos and addresses. Everybody)gave fictitious names, but Cross and his' deputies knew who almost all wore.,. .Cross then allowed the frightened crowd to leave, warning them that they, must .appear in court as witnesses on August'ls.
