Incidental mention. was: made of the fact that,..a party :of ■ scouts had rendered useful .service;. in .'exposing a case of cruelty to animals at Cbristchurch, The opinion seemed at ; once .to -arise 'that here; was'an.idea capable of useful de-velopment.,-v; ■„■■ Vv;.- V 'v"-- ; :1|-.'
_ ■ The inspector, Mr. >Seed, opined that if the boy; scouts'' .would : undertake the work of animal "protection on orderly lines, reporting cases of apparent cruelty to their officers, they might render valuable service.. Ho instanced particularly, tbo: detection of ill-treatment of horses in outlying country districts .as;a class;of work in which the scouts might ;be employed with advantage. • The proposal was favourably received, and .tentative suggestions were made by members that medals might bo offered the. scouts as an incentive, and that they might be supplied with periodicals and other; literature dealing with the . humanitarian treatment of animals.
Eventually it was decided to approach the district, headquarters ,of the scout organisation v"ith a view to securing the 00' operation desired.
