MUNICIPAL ORCHESTRA.
A SUCCESSFUL REHEARSAL. Practical initiation of a notable move* ment took shape in the Town Hall last evening, when the Municipal Orchestra, under the exacting baton of Mr. J. Maughan ( Barnett, held its first rehearsal. The result of the rehearsal hasj" in itself, almost justified the work which had to be undertaken by Mr. Barnett in order to causo certain citizens to see eye to eye with him in the matter. There were forty instrumentalists present, all carciully selected ( by the conductor. Mr. Herbert Blay was appointed leader and deputy conductor —a wise choice. Mr. Barnett expects that the full strength of the orchestra will be about 45, as a proper balance must bo maintained. The works rehearsed last evening were two movements of the Haydn Sjmphony; three movements of Massenet s delightful "Le Cid" ballet suite; the prelude to the third act of "Lohengrin" (Wagner), and the popular "Cornelius" march. Rehearsals will be held every Tuesday evening, and the first concert will take place either at the end of the present j«"tli or earLv in tho next.
