IN THE DEAD OF NIGHT.

:;* ; x ALLEGED DOINGS IN THE CITY.

Sometime after midnight on Monday, • a boarder in a house in Cambridge Terrace was aroused from his sleep by* a strange .noise in the house.- He hastily lighted a candle and proceeded ' > towards the room whence the sound emanated, and was astonished to see two men bending over the sleeping . . form of another boarder. Becoming aware that someone was watching them, the intruders knocked the candle over. and hurriedly made their escape. Their , disappearance for the time being was complete. A ■ search of the house revealed the fact that a boarder hTthe' house had lost'a gold watch and chain,. , and another boarder was minus 6ome of his monetary possessions. Two hours later a policeman on duty ' in _ Ingestre. Street,, -though knowing < , - nothing of the incident, neverthelesa,.had his suspicions aroused by the ap- - pearance of two men. > The constable , accosted them, and being dissatisfied with the explanation which -they tendered as to the reason of their nocturnal wanderings, invited them to accompany him to the Mount Cook Police Station. When the party arrived at the station a citizen was already there lodging a - complaint that the door of the house 'V in which he'resided had been broken ' in by two men, who afterwards de-' camped. The upshot of the whole affair was that the two men arrested—Jamea Vincent Crimmins and Charles Cunningham—were yesterday convicted at the •Magistrate's Court for having.wilfully ' damaged a door in North Street. • Later in the day Detective Kemp I completed certain inquiries whioh he , had in hand, and, as a result, the men will appear at the Magistrate's Court 'again this morning, and will be charged ' with that they did'break and enter .by night the dwellinghonse of -Mary Spencer, in Cambridge Terrace, and steal. therefrom a gold watch, chain, and pendant, of a total value of £17. _
