A tunnel roof collapsed at Stanford Merthyr colliery, Jlaitland, burying a collier named - Richard Evans. . Evans's mates started digging him out, and he was almost rescued alive when another fail buried two more men. The digging was continued, and the two latter men were rescued badly injured. Alter, several further falls Evans was recovered dead. The miners displayed heroism, digging in imminent danger through additional falls.
