THE FISHING SEASON.
TO; OPEN ;ON SATURDAY. NEXT// Saturday nextis October lV and to. the sober: disciples of Izaak Walton perhaps the most, important day in-the jwholoyear. Anyhow, .■ there; are a good! ; many wiping the'dust off their rods and looking' over last year's flies ■in preparation for the opening, of the trout-fishing season at; the end of -the week... For. thejayeraga: fisherman, the date could .hardly /.have fallen more acceptably, as. those'eager for the.silent fray will be able tof.enjoy, a nice '"week-end /with, the. satisfying, knowledge /that the bit of water he selects has not been fished over this season. /
■'. The-prospects are distinctly good.': There has not- been a great; deal of rain 'this spring,' and consequently there is'not so much water in the streams at present as is usual at this'time :of the:;year!i.;This favours the fisherman, as it.makes -for dearer water and hotter going than;tho, swollen,' discoloured streams; of'a very wet. spring. Indeed, the conditions for the-week-end promise to -be ideal. There are favourable reports from "allsources. Owing to a big escape from tho reservoir at Wainui; the .mile of water immediately beiow the dam is said to 1» better :trian it has ever been, and that favourite spot is sure to be well whipped between Saturday aud Monday morning, and it would be no surprise if ;somo good weights were basketed. : To those who love the. unbeaten track thereis said to be good ■•sport awaiting them . at Moonshine and.■ Akatarawa, whilst Mungaroa is: sure to tempt many to the top ' of the valley. As usual, Waikanae is.chokcn with small fish, and for clever anglers there are a' few- good fish in the Porirua and Malcara streams that are apt to "listen to reason"; when the strong north-westers blow. ,:' It is not likely that thefish.\ill'-rise of an evening to any extent for a while owing to the cold weather: that is being experienced. Within, the, week. at least two frosts have occurred at'Wainui, .and on at least one occasion ice has formed on still 1 water,, With, the first gush of sum-, iner, however, the fisher at eve will be a quietly familiar figuro.on {the low-set banks of our streams. ■;■;-' - ; ",
