v.-;' ——-4— ; SELECTION' OF NEW CANDIDATES: A correspondent writes:—Since ever an election' was held, of- any- sort, Treutliam has been a power to be reckoned with, and the meeting of ratepayers'and electors held in Benzie's Hotel last Monday oyening proved no exception. 1 The chairman (Hr. W. Brown) outlined the reasons, which prompted tho gathering of s;o large and representative a body of electors, in view ol'-'the l"forthcoming, election of seven commissioners to constitute tho'incoming Town Board, on Wednesday, September 21. _ Seven 'candidates::were cKosen to coii-" test . the. election in favour of -the rate.payers generally,', and :wire pledged:;':, (a) To stand • for a full and, j ust: administration of: all affair's of the respeetive of purty; (b) to secure for'them a proper control''of. the board's'.affairs 'generally; (c) to keep the rates and administrative expenditure as . low as possible, consistent with reasonable, and safe progress; (d) to attend to the natural development of; the district on progressive and economical lines.

The disfranchisement of all"Wellington electors interested in the Upper Hutt election (by. reason of no polling booths being granted them other than at. Upper Hutt, a journeyj'of forty miles, there and back), was characterised-as a gross injustice on'.the part of the . commissioners responsible, and may be made the subject of. a .further. meeting of protest.. •, : .
