. _ A representative meeting. of settlers residing at Waikan'ao, Paekakariki, and,the intermediato district, was held at the for-, iner place on Saturday afternoon, Mr., M. J. Lynch presiding. The purpose of the meeting was to consider the best steps to take relative to railway fences, the responsibility of which the Government declines to take over. - A long speech by Mr. Field, M.P. (detailing •• the timehonoured "representations to the Minister"),, appeared in the local-papers. ■ According to, the ' speech ,in ' question,. the usual -"fog of \war" v had been created, by the Minister,, and there the matter rested. .As is customary at such 1 meetings, certain resolutions ' were '■ passed; All hands "were urged to take -action." The Primp Minister and other "Miniswith -members of both-Houses of Parliament, - will attend at Newtown Park on the afternoon of Dominion-Day, September 26, when tho - defence and school cadets'-are to be reviewed by His Excellency the Governor. There will be no speeches -in the afternoon, but at the reception to be held at tho Alexandra Barracks in the evening, addresses will be delivered by the Governor and Prime Minister. The Mavor, Mr. T. M. Wilford, will preside. - Mr. Parker, on behalf of the Musical Union, has kindly promised •to contribute a programme of musical selections. For tlie occasion of ,the military display, to be given in the Basin Reserve in the evening, the grounds will be specially illuminated with- arc lights. Messrs. Crichton and M'Kay, architects, invite tenders for tlie erection of a bulk store at Upper Hutt. Messrs. J. W.- Thompson and Co.', pastrycooks, Courtenay Place, insert an advertisement in this issue referring to their Nutraline bread.The' quarterly meeting of the Welsh Society of Wellington, will be held in Godber's rooms, Cuba Street, on Thursday evening. A splendid residential property, situate at Nelson, is_ advertised for sale in this issue by Messrs. Fell and Atkinson, Nelson.
