THE LABOUR MARKET.

ATHENICS IMMIGRANTS. PLENTIf 01' WORK UP COUNTRY.' From information gained by inquiry at tho Labour Department it appears that plenty of employment is offering, especially in tho uuuairy districts, and, that the only congestion in-the labour market is connected with certain classes ■ of labour in the city.

The Department reports a large demand for bushmen in tho Gisborne district at good, prices, a few-scrub-cutters being also wanted. Twenty-six carpenters avo wanted, in the Gisborue and Napier districts, and half a. dozen joiners iu.Hawke's Bay at award wages. 'Labourers are wanted at- Tokovnaru, Poverty Bay, at Is. an hour for a nine-hour day; and sawmill hands in the. Marlborough Sounds.at 95..a day. Tinsmiths, cabinetmakers, blacksmiths, bricklayers, ■ and ploughmen are all in demand at higher wages than were offered last year. Several vacancies for farm hands, after being oh tho Department's books for' a week, are' being filled by new arrivals off the Athenic;, but. even now the Department could place a score of-form workers in the Hawera district,, a; dozen'.. in the vicinity' of Palmerston North, \ and' several near: Eketahuna.

Farmers writing to the Department tell -of great in getting competent men even at this early;,stage of the season, and it appears that any man capable -of meeting the , requirements ■ could get. work without difficulty in almost any part of the country. .Twentytwo requests, for farm, .hands were, received on one day last week.. The Department states, that there is a fair amount ofi employment available in the city: except, for unskilled labour. A good ' many men. who cannot, for' good jeasons leave town, are , 0n1y.., casually, employed, and- in numerous cases hardship ; is being.suffered through inability to get work locally. A number of clerks 'have-applied'to .the Department, but the only employment that can be offered them. is Tural work. Some> farmers are willing .to/take intelligent young, fellows, even without' previous experience in farm' work.- a. '/' ■"'■' ■■ •:. '"■•:■■''"', a
