Thomson, S.M., a fishmonger named, Bartolos Barnaowas fined-. £2 at the instance, of the local Society for the Prevention of. Cruelty to Animals for cruelly neglecting fowls by keeping them- without food and -water. Evidence was given to the effect that about sixty fowls were penned'.in a small -yard, and besides having no food or. water; woro' without shelter during the recent wet weather. Tho success of -Mr. "Geoff" Watchorn in winning the welter championship at tho Australasian boxing contests at Auckland on Saturday was very gratifying to his many friend* here." Watchorn is recognised as a "real good sport," and is very popular in boxing circles here. It is understood that at the earnest solicitations of his relatives he will now retire from the ring. " Tho many friends of Mrs. .T. Fraser, sou., of Komako, will regret to learn that she is now in Palmerston suffering from a severe uttack of pleurisy.. The kitchen 'f a house occupied by Mr. W.' M'Conkey, in Grey Street, was gutted by fire at three o'clock Hiis morning.' The brigade saved the other portion of tho building.
