DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS.

.FIRST DAY'S PLAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Christchurch, September 5. Ideal conditions prevailed for the opening of the New -Zealand Men's Golf Championship meeting at Shirley. The entries, of which there- is a grand total, of are well up to the standard, and 'th« competitors include practically all the New Zealand cracks, including' J. A. Clements, of Cliristcliurch (professional), winner of the open championship at Auolda'nd last year, A. Duncan (Wellington, present amateur champion), Dr. (i. Gosset (Christchurch, 1895), A. H. l'isher (Otago,' 1901), and H. C. Smith (Otago, 1908), past champions; also W. Barman (Cliristcliurch), B. li. Wood (Christ--C; St. G. Gore (Wellington;, AV. A. Humphreys (Christchurch), J. C. Bidwill (Wellington), Captain Shannon (Wellington), B. C. ftutherford (Christchurch),. and EL E. H. Balneavis (Wellington). , ■ The first and second rounds of the open championship were decided today. ' A record round' for the links was put up by B. B. Wood last March, when he made 74.. . The bogey score for the course' is ■ 77, The championship event has been only : 'three 'years in existence, A. Duncan (Wellington, the present: amateur bhampion) securing it at Napier in 1907, and J.' ,C. Clements- (the Christchurch professional) at Dunedin' in 1908,. and retaining it at Auckland last -year.
