A meeting of the Wellington' Philosophical .Society will, be held in the Dominion Mtseutu on. Wednesday next, commencing at :8 p.m. . . . Mr. James Riley, who was for many years closely identified with the develop ment of the iron ' and steel industry inthe West of Scotland, has died at Harrogate at'the age of seventy. After a varied experience in.England, Mr, Riley, about thirty years ugi/, took over the general: direction of the works of the Steel Company of Scotland. In that eapacity■- hu pupuluriMjU iniJtl steul tui boiler-making, bridge-building, and other purposes, in 1887 Mr. Riley received the Bessemer , medal "for his valuable services to the open-hearth-industry, especially in developing the manuiacture of mild steel of high ouality." In Ibai he transferred " his/services to the Glasgow Iron and Steel Company. Subsequently, ho severed his connection with that company in order, to undertake the manuiac-' ture of iron and steel on his own account at the Richmond Works at Stock-ton-on-'i'ecs. In. Juno, "1900, Mr. Riley was presented with an address and i;heq.ie for iioUO by the members of the steel and iron'- trades of. the West of Scotland. The address set forth that it was largely through his indomitable. and indefatigable energy.arid exertions that mild steel was ultimately accepted-as suitable for shipbuilding."'
