Tto postal authorities advise that the Victoria,' which left Sydney yesterday for Auckland, has on board English and Australian mails. The Wellington portion of the mail will arrive pel . Main Trunk express on Monday next. Last night's Gazette contains a notice to mariners that from a recent survey made, by Lieutenant Cooke, R.N., of H.M.S. Pioneer, a general shoaling of Nelson Harbour was discovered. On inquiries being made in Auckland (says our special correspondent) in reference to tile rumour of trouble in the coal-mines, it was ascertained, that lnimy local companies and .merchants have laid in large supplies of coal in order that they may lie prepared, ■ to 6ome extent, for any contingency that may arise. One of the bookmakers operating at tho Wairarapa Hunt Club's meeting at Clareville yesterday., gave evidence of wishing to leave hurriedly after one of the races, but Detectivo Kemp and one of tho constables, who were present, detained the man. When it came to settling, however, the bookmaker was only able to return the actual mdhey invested with him on the race. ' • ' A woman, aged 61, who was found in an exhausted condition on the roadside near the Duppa Street K«serve on Wednesday morning, and' who was- afterwards removed to the hospital, was reported lost night to be slightly improved after her distressing experience. ." Bull,, in London, aged 44. Dr. Bull was a .graduate of "Canterbury College, and was a member of a brilliant, group of science students who were ut the college twenty years ago. Professor Bnthertord was. one of tho contemporaries of : Dr., Bull; who graduated M.A. with hrst-cla'ss -honours 111 chemistry, and also took the B.Sc. degree. He subsequently - studied in Germany, and gained the degree of Ph.D. at Munich.' Last night's Gazette proclaims the new Clyde Quay Wharf to be a legal landingplace for the port-of Wellington. ■ Mi , . Colonel Bauchop occupied the chair at the meeting of Wellington Garrison officers last night, and there was a large attendance. Lieutenant Skelly delivered an interesting lecture on the battle of Salamanca, and Surgeon-Colone'l Purdy spoke, on the difference between the.sanitary arrangements in the Kusso-Japancse war and during the British operations in South Africa. Interesting discussions fol-. lowed both addresses. ,; The Wellington branch of the Navy League is issuing a souvenir programme (in connection with Wednesday's demonstration) to-headmasters of schools' for .distribution among the juvenile members of the league.
