(By i'cleKriieU.—trcaa Association., Nelson, August 81. • The New Zealand Ladies' Hockey Championship Tourilambnt commenced to-day in.glorious weather. Abuut l! 00 visiting players arid eleven teams are tak' ing.parti;and.there was a very large attendance of spectator?.. fivo matches were played daring the liny, • Auckland met Wellington, scorilig . a win by two goals to nil after a well-con-tested game. The Bcordrs . were .Misses Dainos and Steele. ■ The ■ Wellington defenoe was very sound. . . ■•: The . match Wairarapa v. Wanganui ended iu a draw, each side scoring one gdnl.. Miss Cottier scored for Wairarapa, i and Miss Perrett for Wanganui. '-■-■'. Greymouth v. 'I'aranaki was also a drawn game, neither side scoring. Like the preceding match, the gamo was very • willing throughout. The match of the day Was; provided by the. meeting of Hawko's Bay and Otago. The gamo resulted in ' a victory ' for HawkeY Bay, the illlainpions, by two goals tb nil. Tho chalnpion team showed splendid form, but in tlie first-spell were unable to make an impression on their opponents, tho stpcll ending with no score. Play was vory fast in .the second spell, and several likely scores on both sides nere prevented by magnificent work. Eventually Miss Brady got one into .the net' for Hawke's Bay. Otago then pressed for somo time, but, after good work by the-Huwko's Bay forwards. Miss Niven, found the net, and, shortly afterwards, also shot ' Hawke's Bay's third EoaL .- ■",
Nelson defeated Westport by three goals to nil. The scorers were Misses Emms and Fowler (2). Owing to the' intervention of the New Zealand Association, the rules of . tho tournament havo been altered so. that every-team.piays every othor team.
