At a meeting of the, executive of the Plamerston branch of the Political Reform League last night, further arrangemnets were made in. connection with the league's "social," which is to be held on. Monday, September 12. It was announced that .Messrs. Massey, Malcolm, Nosworthy, Guthrio, Hine, and Hemes, members of Parliament, would give short addresses, at the gathering, which is expected to bo a very large one.' ] "Impromptu speeches" were the programme • at ■• the ,weekly meeting of- the Literary and Debating Society last night, and. a;competition.was held.. Mr... J; 0. Young was judge, and the three .'. best speakers'were placed as follow:—It. H. Billens, ■80 points; J. ' Bobertson, 77; J. M'Connon,- 70- points. At the nest meeting there will, be-a;debating contest between Messrs. A. Buchanan , and J. Epb-i ertson on the subject: "That arbitration is likely to take the-place, of war,: in settling ' international; disputes in the future." . •. - -;. The local lodge of Druidft.held its quarterly summoned meeting last night, when there was a very .large attendance. Bro. F. Harriman presided. Four new members were initiated, and three other pro-r posed.- It was decided to .present- a shield for a card competition among the lodges..
