THE ASSOCIATION GAME.
SATURDAY'S MATCHES. Senior Final—A (2) drew with B (2).' Y.M.C.A. (3) defeated Thistle (1). ' : The principal events of the. Association football fixtures, on Saturday afternoon were tho."first, division trial match between teams composed of. selected players in the first division league, and tha Charity Cup match.between Y.M.C.A. and Thistle; a contest to decide a draw which .resulted between these' teams when they met previously. In the second division 'Charity Cup competition St. John's feated Brooklyn by 5 goals,to'2, and the semi-final for the Henderson' Memorial Cup (third division) saw. St." David's decisively defeated by| Wadestown by 5 goals to nil. The weatner was atrocious., . In view:- of the rain which had fallen previously, the city reserves were not available,, and. the soccer enthusiasts had their, ardour severely tried at wind-swept Miramar, where a fierce northerly gale and sloppy fields combined to thoroughly break the'spirit of the players and render anything like a decent exhibition oi •football quite out of the. question. The wind did what it liked with the ball, and all concerned wero heartily glad when tho games ended.' Thejeast said 'about tho character of the play the better. A TEAM, 2; B TEAM, 2. The senior trial match between.A, and B teams, played at- Miramar, was a burlesque—broad iarce, in fact. So far as could bo seen the aifair was treated as a huge joke by everybody but the small and disconsolate-looking group of officials who shivered on;the line, and no doubt breathed turgid anathenia upon everything in general, and the "Alphas" aud the "Betas" in, particular. To give a professional description of this game would be to render unto tho event inoro honour than it was worth. Therefore let it suffice to say that each side scored two goals. To effect these it appeared to be sufficient to start the ball in the direction of the goal-posts, and leave the rest to the wind. The second spell was mercifully curtailed very considerably.. Mr. H. Waters was tho referee. ■ ■ Y.M.C.A., 3; THISTLE, 1. After a mediocre display Y.M.C.A. defeated Thistle (with whom they had previously drawn) by 3 goals to 1. M'Girr, Self (a junior playing substitute), and Miller scored for the winners, and Ash, who made his first appearance ■ this season, scored for tho losers. Mr. W. Wood acted as referee. Thistles now drop out of the Charity Cup contest. SECOND .DIVISION. St. John's defeated Brooklyn by f> goals to 2, after, a' hard gamo which, was spoilt by the high wind and the smallncss of the ground at Miramar.' Meildo kicked two penalties, Shaw one penalty, and Smith and Bruce scored for St. John's, while R. Beavis and Hastings scored for Brooklyn. Meikle, Hayton, Smith, and Shaw played soundly for St. John's, and Davies, in-goal for Brooklyn, navoi his side continually by brilliant goaT-keeping. Mr, Hayton was referee. HENDERSON MEMORIAL CUP. In the semi-final for the Henderson Memorial Cup contest (third division),, Wadestown defeated St. David's by 5 goals to nil, •
