A LITTLE FRICTION.

MR. HASELDEN, S.M'.„ AND THE ; '•■ /'RAILWAY REVIEAY." ■".' ''In-a. letter to tho president of tho Amalgamated. Society :'of Railway '■ Servants (Air.- W. A. Ypitch) on the subject of-the article in the "Railway Re-, view," commenting on his conduct a3 chairman pro tern..of the Noi'th Island Railway Appeal Board, Mr. W. 'R. Haselden '■• intimated■' that unless- .thd : Executive. 'Council'.'disa vowed 'the- 1 articlo ho would .refuse, to. sit on tho'Appeal Board in future. ...To.this (says the "Review") Mr.Veitcli replied:— > . "Sir, —1 am in receipt of-your communication of 22nd ultimo, with reference to 'an article appearing in tho 'Railway Review' of 3rd Juno last'- and in reply beg to advise you that, as 1 intimated at the time,'' the '.matter- will bo considered 'at., the. next meeting of our. council, early in. August. ,1 am, however, ;at a loss to 'understand in what respect our society has anything whatever to do with, the Railway Appeal Boards. Wo-represent (not before tho Appeal Board) about 6500 members of the' second division only. The Railway Appeal Board is set up for the benefit of Uio .whole- railway service; therefore,, if;we refuse to distvow.the articlo complained of,,and you adhcre.to.your decision not.to preside, on either board.until such is done, it is apparent that your method of obtaining - redress will punish not only tho members of our.society, but the whole railway service, .including, those' who have no. connection with our organisation whatever, and are, therefore, innocent and free-from any responsibility in connection with any. article appearing in the 'Railway Review.' Such action on your part seems to ■be a confirmation of the opinion expressed by the editor in the article under review, viz.,' that 'We' aro afraid Mr. W. Jl. Haselden does not exactly realise tho nature of the-tribunal over wh'oh he is' occasionally asked to preside."'
