Christchurch, August 18. The annual contest-for the New Zealand Ladies' Golf Championship commenced at Shirley this morning in fine spring weather, and, with minor events, will last six days, one round being played each day. There are forty-nine championship entries, as against fifty-two at Manawatu last year, and though many of the "stars" have been unable to attend, i there are present many promising young players, notably Miss Collins, of Wellington, who recently won the Wellington championship, though only seventeen years of age. . The form shown to-day was consistently good, and, in fact, it has been steadily improving at every championship meeting. Unfortunately, Mrs. Bevan, present champion, was unable to compete, and ■nss Tweed accordingly won her match by default.,, ■■' Miss Collins, Wellington champion, prevailed over Miss Alison,' of Auckland, whilst Miss Christie, ex-champion, was '"well up on Mrs. Ward, of Duncdin. ; Miss Brandon, runner-up last year, beat ,trs. Matheson, whilst Miss. E. Pearce ('Auckland) prevailed over Mrs. O'Meara (Gisborne), and Miss ' Gray (Manawatu) . over Miss Innes (Manawatu). ; Miss Wray is showing very promising form, and is picked by several competent judges as the possible, winner of the championship. ' Miss Snodgrass, of Westport (West Coast and Manawatu champion), though only arriving this morning after having been bar-bound for five days, easily won her match. ' '. ■ Miss Snodgrass beat Mrs. Bevan, New Zealand champion, for the Manawatu championship. , The contest of the day, however, was that between Miss Wood, of Christchurch, and Miss Nora Gorrie, of Auckland. Both players were neck and neck at the. eighteenth hole, and on an extra hole being played, Mi6s Wood won. The results are as follow:— FIRST ROUND. In tho afternoon play took placo for tho Donnelly Cup presented by tho late .Mrs. G. 1\ Donnelly, of Hawkes Bay somo years ago, through the Hawke s Bay Club to the ladies of New Zealand. With the Donnelly Cup contest there is bein" played simultaneously a medal comnetition, both events being decided on stroke handicaps. In the medal competition thero is a first prize for handicaps under 16, and one for 10 and over, iho Donnelly Cup, however, is open to all winners in one class. Tho results ore as follow:— Miss F. .Moore (Christchurch), handicap 25, net score 77 (winner of the Cup also winning first prize for those with a handicap of. 1G and over). Mrs. M'Cartby (St. Clair) handicap 10; net score, 80 (winner of first prize for thoso with handicaps under 1G).
