■■■'.■. S.S. AOTEA ASHORE. ■'■■. }' . News of ,a serious accident to' an Australian trader has" been received. The vessel—the s.s. A.otea—was, however,;'much' more fortunate than many other of:the steamers that have been in-trouble'since .the beginning of the year,.for her-troublc occurred at' a, sp'ot accessible for assistance to be rendered her. According to advices,, she was "bound to Montreal from London, under orders to take the berth for Australian ports under.the auspices of tho line subsidised by. tho Canadian Government, and was fourteen niilcs off the Martin ltiver when she suddenly took the ground: Evidently, a-fair rate of speed was being maintained at the time, for she struck the. rooks with some force, as it at once became apparent that tho damage was extensive. Healisiug the position fully, the captain ordered a quantity, of. coal—about 501) tons—to be jettisoned, which was done, but did not-result as 'exoected, for the steamer remained faßt for i some days'longer, ultimately being towed'off. by tugs, and a salvagcosteamer which, had hurried to the scene. She had been making water all the time," and although, the pumps kept the inflow in check somewhat, the holds were" fairly ;full when' Quebec was reached., "Upon arrival, there, a hurried survey was .conducted,' and revealed that Nos. 1 and 2 holds were badly "holed," and that the.'engine-room tank was also leaking.'. So far as could . be learned, the other holds were safe. Until the steamer, was docked it was impossible, to ."state if her hull'was intact. Arrangements were being made to take the steamer into dock at Quebec when advices were dispatched. Prom-information supplied, we learn that the repairs will be completed in time for the Aotea to get away from Montreal on September 15.

The s.s. Defender is advertised to sail for Hokitika, direct to-day at 3 p.im .
