Arnst and Barry havo completed their trainingfor to-day's great race on the Zambesi River for the sculling championship of. the world. Both men have stood the sovero preparations they have undergone splendidly, and the race promises to be about tho finest ever held for the championship. ARNST VERY CONFIDENT. WEIGHT REDUCED TO 13 STONE. HIPPOPOTAMI ON THE COURSE. (By Teleerapn.—l'rcsa Association.) Christchurch, August 17. Messages sent from the Zambesi River by Dr. H. T. J. Thacker, who is one of Dick Arnst's warmest supporters, have been received here. Dr. Thacker regards the course chosen for the great race to be an ideal one. The weather since his arrival has been brilliantly fine, but on one or two afternoons a strong wind has got up, raising a considerable jobble on the surface of the big river. Both Arnst. and Barry are well. Dr. Thacker says Avnst is down to 13st, which is 3111). less than the weight at which he rowed Whelch at Alcaroa on April 4. "Arnst and his supporters are very confident that the champion will retain the .title. Apparently this confidence is shared by others interested, for Dr. Thacker states that there has been no solid betting on the race.

Harry Floyd, Arnst's coach and trainer, who was lately reported to be down with . fever, has completely recovered.

Dr. Thacker reports that full arrangements have been made for tho transport of visitors to the Falls, and trains have .been arriving daily, bringing excursionists. The championship race is to be preceded by a local regatta, commencing to-day. There have been no serious troubles with the insects and other pests popularly supposed to infest the region. Dr. Thacker says it has been . necessary, according to private letters received from Arrist and his trainer, to' clear the course of hippopotami; which are, of course, very plentiful 'in tho Zambesi. Dr. Thacker mentions in a message that "Dick" Arnst went out with the British South African Company's men'and bagged ono hippopotamus.

A cable message was.also received \n Christchurch to-day by the secretary of Arnst's committee. It stated that tho champion was in his best form, and Was feeling confident of winning.
