JUMPED OVERBOARD.
PASSENGER-BY S.S. WARRIMOO.
What' seems to have been a very determined' . suicide..'was reported' 'by the Warrimoo when sle arrived . here from . Sydney, yesterday. It appears that while the vessel, was at sea, .about 4.7 p.m. on Monday last, a steerage passenger named J..,8;. Brochie Was seen to • mount the railing and leap from thejorecastle head. "Man overboard!" carne the'instant call from the man at the wheel, and the officer on duty succeeded in throwing a h'fe ; belt to the mun in the/water, but, although it almost touched him, he madu .no attempt to clutch it. As soon as the alarm.was.raised the, engines were stopped and- a.'boat: swiftly' cleared away- and lowered, and'a search commenced.' The Warrimoo remained in the: vicinity for over an hour and a halfi but there were no, signs of the man, ho having sank out of.sight in a remarkably short spaco of time. Dusk coming, on, .'tho steamer-re-sumed her-voyage. 'Inquiry elicited the information that Brochie had come'.from Scotland to Sydney, and. was for New Zealand intending to settle here. He is' described by fellow steerage, passengers as a man about thirty-eight .years ■ and.it is further stated that he'had 'complained of feeling unwell, but did not say.in : what way. On tho deck, from .where he sprang into the sea, was.found a draft for £25 in a small wallet, neatly folded, and some other belongings. He had complained to some of his fellow passengers, that he was "being hatched and talked about," and this seems to have worried him..-.-.."-.
