The armoured cruiser Duke of Edinburgh,- a vessel of 13,500 tons' displacement," which was .completed in 1906 at a cost of -',£1,201,687, has - had a narrow escape from being wrecked. The vessel was stranded on Atherfield Ledge, under the cliffs of the Isle of Wight, and lay, in a. dangerous position, the sea, fortunately, being smooth at the time. ' '.Tugs were promptly summoned, and a flotilla of six of them succeeded in' haul- , ing the cruiser off into deep water again, amid loud cheering from those aboard her and from the crowd, of spectators who had gathered on shore.
