Mr. W. G. Smith, who has- been secretary to the New Zealand Shipowners' Federation since its inauguration, and recently resigned his position to enter the service of the Union Steam Ship Company at Dunedin, was the recipient of a presentation on Friday at Auckland from tho federation, consisting of a handsome gold watch and chain and .sovereign case, suitably inscribed. There was a largo attendance of representatives of shipping companies and shipowners, including representatives of the Union and Hmldart-Parker Steamship Companies, also Northern Steamship Company, Devonport Ferry Company, Bradney and Binns, and others. Mr. T. H.,White, the president of : the federation, was in the chair, and in making the presentation ho referred to the formation of the federation, and the services which had been 'rendered by-Sir. Smith, and that upon his retiring from the secretaryship tho federation desired to express its appreciation of the capable and thorough manner in which he had filled the position. The federation further requested thnt he would accept on behalf of Mrs. Smith, a silver tea and coffee service and tray, which was also inscribed. Messrs. C. EaiiEOii and E. W. Alison spoke m complimentary terms of the services rendered by Mr. Smith on behalf of the fefcration, and cordially endorsed the chairman's remarks. Messrs. Abraham and Williams will hold a stock sale at Johnsoaville on Wednesday, August 17.
