TERRITORIAL FORCES.
OFFICERS' EXAMINATIONS. General orders by the New Zealand Council of Defence include the following comments on the work done by candidates at the June quarterly examination of. territorial officers:— Tho work done varied considerably in quality: a few .papers were distinctly good, the mujority only fair, and 'a fewbad. Ifc is evident that, while some of the candidates have not troubled to prepare themselves for the examination, the majority of the candidates have studied the text-books, but suffer from a weak T ness in putting the_ principles therein laid down into practice. This fault applies specially to the examination for field rank.' It is also evident that many candidates do not carefully read ■ the instructions and the questions, nor think out what their , answer is to be before oommencing to put samts on purrer. Many papers were difficult to read owing to bad or careless writing—an important point, aa in orders or reports clear and legible writing is essential. . . ■ Other announcements include the following acting-appointments:— Acting-captains:—Lieutenant J. M'Gregor Elmslie, Wairoa 'Mounted Rifles; Liuutenunt Win. Gardiner, Ohineinuri Rifles. Acting-lieiitenants. — George Raymond Blackett, No. 2 Company (Auckland Division), New Zealand Garrison Artillery; Robert.
