"THE FENCING MASTER." .' After a brilliant season! the. Hugh J.' AVal'd Company gave its concluding pcrforninnco at the Opera House on Saturday evening, when. "The Fencing Master" was again staged. The house was quite full, and the performance in every way an admirable one. ' HIS MAJESTY'S. "A Call of the Heart" at-His Majesty's is a film of rich topical interest at the present time in Wellington, showing the wonderful influence of a- littlegirl over a rich selfish old.man. 'J'ho acting of tho girl is so artless and natural', and her access to and triumph over the- stony and entrenched heart of a hardened miser so perfectly accomplished that it is" no wonder that tho audience follows the film with absorbed interest and silence to break out at the close in enthusiastic applause. "Tho Race Day at Heliopolis" showed horso and camel races in Egypt.' Tho awkward lumbering gait of the camels did not apparently satisfy the local "sports" who gave , vent to some jocular remarks. The gondola ride through Venice convoyed a faithful representation of tho life and methods of this unique and interesting city on thosca. "The Suffragettes' Candidate" is a stern reminder to those who contemplate joining tho ranks of the Amazons to combin'o discretion with zeal. This excellent programme will be replaced by another on Wednesday .©veiling equally, good.KING'S THEATRE. The kinematograph, ever on the quest for new fields to conquer, invades palaeo or jungle .with equal facility. Tho films showing at tho King's,"personally,conduct" the audience on all manner of audacious expeditions. "Buffalo Hunting in Indo-China" shows how such huge cumborsomo boasts as elephants trip lightly through dense tropical brush and assist in the highly adventurous sport of killing the formidable water buffalo. Tho film in natural tints is truo to life, as well as a work of art. "A Chantecler Hat" should act as a warning to ambitious ladies who desire as a crowning adornment a whole barn-yard. "Ton-te-lini' practices bull-fighting in a draw-ing-room, and. leaves the spectator to calculate the cost of replacing the furniture long before tho "bull" receives its quietus. The exhibition is instructive and entertaining, and- will be. continued two more .nights. ■ ■ .'.- ; , ; SKATING RINK. Tho Olympia Rink is one of/the most popular places of winter resort-in tho. city. There were many skaters'at the. morning, afternoon, and 'evening sessions last Saturday, and tho music of the band added considerably to their enjoyment. . Preparations ' are being made for the first carnival of the season, which is to- bo held on Wednesday of next week.
STAR PICTURES; Tho Star Pictures wero displayed to a large gathering at St. Thomas's Hall, Newtown, on Saturday evening. The pictures will not be shown to-night, but tho weekly change of programme is announced for to-morrow. ORGAN RECITAL. Mr. Maughan Barnett, -Municipal Organist, gave one of his admirable recitals on the Town Hall organ last Saturday evening. The programme ivas a varied and interesting'one, beginning with one of the finest of the works of Baoh, the "Toccato in F," including Act l, : Scene 3, of "Tannhauser," and Mendelssohn's "Organ Sonata, N0...2." Mr. Maughan. Baniett also played his own "Berceuse,',' as well as a "Communiori" liv" Eaiilkes, ' Rachmaninoff s ..'•'■Pfcl'ido.' i>V"'Q"Sharp ."Minor," and llenaiid ■ *s Vilbac's'' "Marcho. 'Tromp-' hale." :. "caste;" Lovers of goodcumedy aro reminded that tho first of thren performances of "Caste," the most popular of.P.- .W. Robortson's works, takes place this evening at the Opera Houso under tho direction of Miss Hardingo Maltby, who has carefully trained a company of capable amateurs for tho production.- A successful presentation of_ tho play is expected, and the indications point to good houses. An orchestra under Mr. W. A. Kenny will play incidental music. Af tor the ; first act to r night Miss Eileen Ward will" sing an original song, "The Coming of QueenMary," assisted by a chorus of children who took part in the recent pageant. Copies of the song, which is by Mrs. Bainbridge, a local cuinposer, will. afterwards bo on: sale for the benefit of tho Children's Hospital fund.
