A CORKER IN SILVER. . ■ i The report of an Asiatic effort to corner I tlio whit© metal: According to tho "Ens- j lishraan," an Indian journal, native bank- | eTS in Bombay and Calcutta are making i tho effort, and arc believed to be holding | half the world's supply of silver. But a ; "corner" in silver cannot be' engineered i very easily, becanso tho sources of supply 1 or© extensive, and tho output can be read- , ily increased. Owing to tho fall in prices ; many silver mines are not operated, but the white metal is obtained as a by-pro-duct of some gold and lead mines. Tho object of tho corner is obviously to ad- j vanco tho quotation for tho metal, and it must bo admitted that the present price, 24 7-X6d." per ounce standard, is very low. The following table shows the trend, of. prices for a series of years, and-is brought right up to latest cablo. date:—. • , . ■ '"Price'per oz.
