WIFE DESERTION.

Auckland,-August 10. ; In connection with Dr. Kndlay's Destitute Persons Bill and its provisions deal-"" ing with deserting husbands,-' Mr. P. :"M. .: Mackay (chairman of the Auckland . Charitable Aid Board) says:— ' • . "Last year the Auckland Board ex< pendedin the maintenance of children ia industrial schools .£BBS ; 13s. 7d., and for children boarded out in private homes 12s. 3d., making , a total of .£1416 ■■ ss. lOd. This means that 72 children were , provided for in industrial schools and 38 children in private homes, - a- total of 110 ■' 'children. If the Government would mako ' itself responsible for the bringing back . of every deserting husband or father wheu. 1 advised" of such by Charitable Aid' Boards in tho Dominion, those blackguards who ; desert women and children depending upon- them would soon realise that it would not pay."- . ■' ;
