PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
ifiProm Our Special CorresDondcnt.i Palmerston, August 10. The Opera House was crowded last night, when a variety entertainment was given in aid of All Saints Church building fund. The entertainment was divided into three parts, the first consisting of vocal items, in which those contributed by Mr. Roley Robertson, of Wellington, were the chief feature, and fairly brought down the house. Tho second part was a performing dog show, while the final part comprised tableaux, dances, etc., which were all well done. The entertainment proved so successful that it has been decided to 1 repeat it next Thursday. ' The weekly meeting of the local Debating and Literary, Society was held last night, when, notwithstanding counterattractions, there was a pood attendance of members. The subject for debate was "Freehold v. Leasehold," Messrs. A. E. Clausen and H. J. Canton being the leaders.'' At'the conclusion of the debate a'vote was taken; the leaseholders securing a narrow victory. . The executive of the District Nurse Socicty" held its usual meeting yostcrday afternoon. Sub-Inspector O'Donovan gave notice that he would move at the next meeting that the name of the society be altered to that of "St. John Ambulance Nnrso Society." The nurses' report for July stated that IGO visits had been paid to patients. At the monthly, meeting of the Terrace End School Committee 1 last evening the headmaster (Mr. F. Fairbrolher) reported that there were 413 names on the roll, with ail average attendance of 35't. The secretary reported that a tender had been accepted for additions to the school.
