CITY COUNCIL.
COMMITTEES' REPORTS. The City Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. T. M. Wilford. M.P.) and Councillors Cohen, Ballinger. Frost, Trevor, Atkinson, Devine, Fitzgerald, liindmnrsh, Cannichael, ShirtclilTe, Fletcher, and Morrah.
The Finance and Property Committee recommended:—
That a compassionate allowance.ot .£1 per week fur iifty-two week's be granted to the widow of a late corporation employee. ■
'l.'but an application from an ex-cor-poratioii employee for a compassionate allowance be not entertained.
That application be made to the Gov-ernor-in-Council for consent to the luy-ing-off ol' a forty-foot street oil' Grass Street, subject to the building line being set back thirty-three feet from the centre line.
That, tho Winglield Street alignment ca.-;es be discontinued.
That Mr. G. Roberts be appointed keeper of the Slount Cook Pouud.
The report was adopted. The' Power Stations and Tramways Committee recommended:—
That bonuses for conductors bo paid for tho citial'lei''elided June 2li, amounting to ..iJG 6s. Hit.
That the council agree to the conditions proposed by the ' Government in connection with the erection of a tramway shelter shed at Lambton Quay. That concession tickets between Courtenay Place and the city boundary cannot be granted at the present- time. The report was agreed to. The Abattoirs, 'Milk Supply and Public Health Committee .recommended :—
That the request of Messrs. Johii .Fuller And Sons for a postponement of repairs to the "Steamboat Restaurant," in Waring Taylor Street, bo acceded to.
That depreciation at tho rate of 2 per cent, per annum be charged 011 plant and buildings at the abattoii.
Tho report was adopted. The Baths and City Reserves Commit tee advised:— •
That' ' permission be granted to Captain Chosney, Adjutant-General of the New Zealand Defence Forces, to shift the saluting battery from l'ipitea Point to Buckle Street. At a previous meeting authority was given to shift the battery to Kolburne Park. '
That the Victoria College Council be informed that shrubs and trees for' planting at tho College grounds, together. with the services of tho Superintendent of Reserves as supeivisor, will be granted to them conditionally upon their providing the required labour for planting. That as. a return showed that tho Superintendent of Reserves had purchased very few plants at auction, no action shonld.be taken. 111 future when any largo' number of trees was required tho nurserymen of the province should be asked to quote prices. The report was agreed to. -
The report of the By-laws, Fire Brigade, and Street Lighting Committee recommended:—
That a lamp be erected at Abel Smith. Street. -.
i That applications for the erection 'of lamps at Myrtle Crescent and Elizabeth Street,' Wndestown, bo refused.
'I'hat the properly owners of Charlton 1 Avenue, off Tory Street, 1 be called upon to put the street in proper- order, and that failing compliance the corporation carry out the worlt and charge. the cost against the owners. ' i ,'T
That the request of the "Now Zealand Times" Company for a reduction,in tho fees payable for the licensing of hoardings be not granted.. ■ '■
The report was adopted. On the recommendation of, tho Legislation and Reclaimed Land Leases. Committee, Mr. L. H. B. Wilson was appointed as the city's valuer in, connection with valuation of Messrs. Ross and Glendining's section of To Aro reclaimed land.
Councillor Fletcher moved—"That tho following resolution; passed at a meeting of the City Council held on July 14, 1910, bo rescinded: 'That the Legislation Committee have considered the matter of tho constitution of tlio committee regarding the word "legislaion," and they have to inform tlie council that they claim' the right as a Legislative Committee to have all-Bills submitted before-going to. the council.' " The motion was carried on the casting vote of' the Major.
