» NOTES AND COMMENTS. (Bl tiIKKCOX.) , Trainer D. Nyhan left for Christchurch by the Mararoa last night, taking with him the Winter Cup candidate, Royal Marino, and some trotters. H. Pritchard left for Riccarton last night with Hydrant, who is engaged in tho Grand National Hurdles. L. Wilson, the well-known horseman, who has been recuperating in Auckland for some .weeks, after his recent accident, has made a good recovery, and returns to Napier shortly. ; Jockeys E. Lowe • and J. Hercock were among the passengers that left -for the South by. the Mararoa last night. A celebrated English jockey tells that once, after meeting witn. a severe accident in the course of a race, which kept him out of the saddle for a. long while, ho was refused payment of his losing fee on the score "that he hadn't finished his ride." . The well-known Gisborne sportsmen, Messrs. C. Morse and G. Oman, went South by the Mararoa last night. Mr. Morse has To Arai engaged in the Grand National Steeplechase, - and Mr. Oman has Paisauo engaged ■in the Grand National Hurdle Race. " A report from. Riccarton states that White Cockade, who is one of the wellbacked candidates for the Grand National Hurdles, is suffering from a cold. C. Jenkins left, for Riccarton last night, to ride Penates in the Winter Cup. Among the other horses which Jenkins will ride is Nautiform, who has proved rather unreliable in the past, but. who it. is hoped will gallop kindly for Jenkins. . ... "Paddy," Lower Hutt, writes to ask if Tauira was in the lead during any part-of tho last five furlongs in the Winter Hurdles at Trentham last mouth. In reply: Paisano was in front throughout the stage of tho race mentioned. - -.: When Tauira and Lovell were being shipped to Riccarton oh ' Monday both were carrying plenty of condition, and it was apparent that they had. been given an easy time since the Trentham fixture. As .both are shaping well at Riccarton, they seem to have benefited considerably by the few, days respite. , . Glenogle appears likely to make his mark as a sire of jumpers. He now stands at Lumsden, Southland, and some of his stock recently created a favourable impression at a meet of tho Birchwood hounds. Glen has shown, himself a useful -hack hurdler in Blenheim,. and another Glenogle gelding, Kaituna, will be competing in hack hurdle events at Riccarton next week. - • Anenfc the doings of the- well-known New Zealand trainer, D. J. Price, a Sydney paper has the following:—"Though Bribery has won him, among other races, a grand national steeplechase and an Australian steeplechase, D. J. Price has not been exactly fortunate since he took up his residence in Melbourne. Quite a number of his supposed 'good things' havo come undone, some of .his horses have entirely failod to act up to their New Zealand reputation, and others have gone wrong. For instance, Subterranean broke a blood-vessel shortly -before the 1907 Caulfield Cup, which, on- form, he appeared to possess an excellent chance of winning; Ataahua lost his rider when tho Australian Hurdle Race of 1908 appeared as good as won; Pink''tin tried to be a certainty for tho Caulfield Cup the same-year,' ran nowhere; Ataahua-was injured'by- a fall shortly • before last year's.V.R.C. -Grand .National, ran no-where-this year, and recently again injured himself, jlotoa and Maui have yet to show themselves worth the sum paid for them in New . Zealand; Martyre'bas failed each time when heavily backed in Melbourne; and 1 , it would only need Coir to run a' close second, in-the Australian Hurdle "Race to fill Price's cup of woe to'overflowing. - • ~■:.•,.,■•.;
