AT THE ZOO.
SEA LION
The animal inhabitants of the Newtown Zoo, even those that hail from tropical dimes, appear, in almost every instance, to be standing the winter remarsably .well The only reported sickness is that of a sea lion, who is suffer-' ing trom.a bad cold. Transplanted ironi the northern hemisphere, he has not yet learned to change' his coat at a convenient season, in his new environment, ami a cold is the result. This' however, is an isolated case. The great majority of the' animals aro in perfect health. Billy," the camel, looks forth from his with an' air 'of placid enjoyment His only rival in expression of utter contentment is ''Dennis" a black-haired porker of the Captain Cook variety. The distinguished pet of the Zoo at the present moment is ft tiny marmoset, aetat one month, and just about three inches long. A couple of adults.of- the species share with ita : parents the honour of its upbringing, 'but when the "baby" "cries," father or mother instantly assume charge of their offspring, with a display of fussiness that sets all who witness it a-laughing. The larger monkeys seem to stand th« NgOM? of winter as well as any tenant of the Zoo. They are as alert as' ever m thieving "tucker" from their com rades, and in fleeing from' the wrath PI the .bereaved. A walk around the Zoo at the present time is a pleasant experience. The birds and beasts in most cases are evidently, healthy and happy, despite the confinement to which they are subjected. . The' only beasts (hat seem really discontented are the lion, who stalks sullenly up and down hia cage, with an occasional deep and rumbling roar; and the dingoes, who trot gloomily about their enclosure, 'ivith a constant eye on the freedom which they are denied. .
