EDUCATION BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly mooting of tho 'Wellington Education Board was held yesterday, there being present. Mr. Robert Leo (chairman), and llossrs W. C. Buchanan, H. Elder, J. Kebbell, A. W. Hogg, M.P., J. G. AY. Aitken, William Allan, A. H. Vile, and IV. H. Field, M.P. FINANCE. According to the monthly statement of finances, the debit balance now stands at .£2104 lis. 6d., as against JMIS 16s. 9(1., which represented the debit balance for the previous month. The individual accounts showing debit balances were: tho buildings account, .£3701 6s. id.; manual and technical education 'account, £M Is. 3d.; secondary education account, .£332 13s. 2d. Tho total authorisations amounted to i£24ilo '12s. Commenting upon the board's financial position, tho chairman 1 said that ho considered the statement to lie very satisfactory. Had it not been for the fact that the Government had withdrawn the grant for tho maintenance of school buildings, the funds would have been in credit to the sum of .£2OOO, ami the balance would have appeared on the other side of tho statement.
GOVERNMENT GRANTS. Grants for additions to the Baraparanniu School (.£345), for new schools at Normandale (,£330), and the Carringloa Estate (.£315), and joint grants for additions to, the Brooklyn School and building requirements at Norruandale, Makerua, and Carrington were received from the Government.
Correspondence from ' the Government on the subject of additional classrooms at the Hutt Main School conveyed the acquiescence of the authorities to the board's proposal to build in wood. The Education Department's suggestion to convert the Ivorokoro School (Vetone) into a side school did not meet with the approval of the board. It was agreed that the Korokoro' School being too far distant. from tho Petone West School, could not conveniently be controlled as part of the.latter. Reverting at a later stage to the general question of side schools, the chairman remarked that the bo'ard did not favour them.
SCHOOL WOHKS.. On the recommendation of the Finance and Works Committee, grants for works, supplies, or subsidies, respectively, were authorised for the following schools:— Petone (primary and secondary), K&rlrarra, Jlaranui, Cross Creek, Ohanui (repairs to residence), Tauherenikau, Normal School (miniature rifle range), Johnsonville, Alfredton, and Carterton.
Applications for grants for, works at Hamua and.Petone (caretaker's residence repairs) were declined. Works at Gladstone, Kaiparoro, nui, and Koputaroa were authorised to be proceeded with. SITES. It was resolved with regard to school sites that the committee's recommendations be adopted as follow:— Hataitai.—Tbat the Ratepayers' Association be informed that in the opinion of the board the Rosoncath and ■ Kilbirnio Schools will meet the requirements of the district.
Gladstone.—That the hearty thanks of the board he accorded to those residents of Gladstone who have contributed to the purchase of several acres of additional ground for tho school site. Silverstream—That the secretary urge that the site to bo provided at Silverstream should be approximately tho area applied for by the. board.
TEACHERS' RESIDENCES. . In connection with the recent announce-ment-by the Government that it was prepared to consider tho question of voting a certain amount towards-the repair and general domestic equipment of teachers' residences, the sub-committeo appointed by tho board to make recommendations with respect to the teachers' residences in tho Wellington district submitted tho following report:— The following works were recommended for execution in entirety:—Residences not over 20 years old—Belvedere, Porirua, Otaki, Kaitawa, Paraparaumu, -. Ohariu, Puketoi,' Bideford, Parkvale, ■ Taucru, Whakntaki, Makuri, Waioni, ICorora, and Kphinui (total expenditure, .£919); works of equal urgency, buildings over 20 years—Mnngatainoka, Cross Creek, Kopuaranga, Koputaroa, Jlanakau, Mauricevillo West, and Dalefiold (total, .£194). Baths, washhouses, and additions.—Shannon, ■ Waitakeke, Palmutanni, Opaki, Matarawa, Mungaroa, Waingawa, Mangaone, and Whitcman's Valley (baths, £XW; washhouses, ,£17o; additions,. .£410).
With reference to the attached residences at Ponatahi and Pirinoa and Wallaceville and Upper Hutt (.£310),. the committee recommended ■ that the amount:) granted in these cases should provide for their re-erection as separate buildings with additions.
Tho order of tho above classification,: stated tho committee, indicated its opin-ion-of the relative urgency of the works. Separately the,committee recommended: (a) That application be made for houso allowance lor Upper Hutt, Ekotahuna, and Pahiatua; (Ijj that application he made for a grant for a new residence at Wainui-o-raaia;. (c) that tho Department be urged to provide' for tho immediate improvement of residonco at lvohinui. Tho l'eport was adopted. STAFF MATTERS. . On the "recommendation of the' Finance •Committee, • tho salaries of manual aiid technical instructors (itinerant) were graded as follow:—Woodwork assistant and cookery instructresses (grade .2), ,£l2O to .£150; cookery assistant (grado 1), .£9.0 to .£120; agricultural instructors, as at present, JE3OO; woodwork instructors, as at present, ,£250. ■■'■"' PROPOSED REMOVAL. Messrs. W. }l. Field, M.P., and H. Elder were appointed a sub-committee to investigate the merits of an application for the removal of the old Waikanae School building to, Rcikoraugi. '
