ATHENIO, LEFT PLYMOUTH.. Advice has been received by the local agents for the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company to the effect that the R.M.S. Athenic left Plymouth on Saturday for Wellington, via Tencriffe, uape Town, and Hobart. She is due at WcUington on September 6. THE MATATUA. A cable received by the local agents states that the Shaw-Savill steamer Matatua, which left Wellington for London on June 30, made a call at Bio do Janeiro, and resumed her voyage on Sunday evening, July 24. THE WAKEFIELD. Amongst the arrivals last night was the steamer Wakefield, from' Auckland, whioh brings part cargo of Newcastle coal, under, charter, to the Union Company. This is the steamer which made a special unsuccessful search for the missing steamer Waratah. The Wakefield is a comparatively new steamer, and is paying her maiden visit to Wellington. Last night at 9.20 o'clock she took up an anchorage m the stream, and mil berth early this morning. ' . t . ■

NEW COASTAL STEAMER. Advico received locally states that Cap- . tain Vercker Bindon, who went to England some months ago on behalf of tho Dominion Steamship Company, has arranged that the Dublin Dockyard Company will construct tho new steamer, which ths company will plaee in commission between Auckland and Gisborne, with calls at intermediate ports. The new vessel is to he named Maranui. She will have a length over all of 187 feet, a breadth of 30 feet, and a draft, with 450 tons of cargo, of lift. 3in. She will have twin screws, and triple expansion engines with a!! the modern appliances, such as ash ejectors, electric light, steam steering gear, and so forth. Her full cubic capacity will bo 760 tons. Accommodation for 34 first-class pas scngers and 15 second-class is provides. Messrs. Ross and Duncan, of Clvde, will supply the engines, and the Maranui is to have a speed of 13J knots fully loaded. It is expected that the vessel will arrive in New Zealand about the end of tho year.

KUMARA AT AUCKLAND. Tho Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's steamer Kumara arrived, jit Auckland on Monday morning from London. The ve=sel left the latter port ion June 4. Strom; S.E. trades and rough head seas delayed tho ship at tho Cape, but fine weather in the southern latitudes enabled the ship to average 12J knots an hour to Tasmania. A strong pale again delayed tho vessel until July 23, when ■ fine weather was met and experienced thence to Auckland. Captain Morton is still in command, and has associated with Mm the following officers:—Mr. A. 0. Bead, chief officer; Mr. H. S. Solomon, second; Mr J Fisher, third; and Mr. C. Boresford! fourth. Mr. Brewer has • charge of tho engine-room, and with him are:—Mr. J. Karris, second engineer; Mr. J. Reid. chief refrigerator; Mr. J. Crawford, second; Mr. J. Hunter, third refrigerating engineer; Mr. D. Morrison,, fourth; Mr. J. Walker, fifth. Mr. J. Russell is chief steward. The Kumara. has a considerable quantity of explosives on board, most of which is for Auckland, besides over 4000 tons of jcneral cargo.

Mr. Bechervaise, who has been acting as New Zealand coastal purser for the Hud-dart-Parker Company, left by the Mocraki on Friday for Sydney to join the new Zealandia as purser.

Mr. W.- T. Hogan, late purser of the Rotomahana, has succeeded Mr. N. M'Buruey as purser of the Wimmera. H.M.S, Pioneer, which was to haye Bailed yesterday for Nelson, will be in port for some days yet. Acting on instructions from the admiral, she will await the' arrival of H.M.S.
