His Excellency the Governor has accepted the position of president of the Veterans' Association, in succession to Lords I'luukot and Rnniurly. His Excellency has been requested . to ask ■ his Majesty King George, to accept the position of patron to the association, in succession to Iving Edward.
The Prime Minister (Sir Joseph lYard) .will leave for Auckland on ■ Saturday to attend the funeral of the late Mr. F. E. Baurae, M.P., which takes place there ou Sunday.
Mr. C. E. Smith, manager of the Alliance Assurance Co. at Dunedin, who has been appointed to succeed Air. "Win. Gill as manager here, has received a presentation from the Dunedih Fire Underwriters' Association, where Mr. R. S. Menzios (chairman) described him as a keen business man, who; had given- his valuable services to tdie association., Mr. W. I. Bolam said that. Mr. Smith, as chairman 'of the Marino- Underwriters' Association of Otago, had done a great deal of work, and his services on behalf of public institutions'were ; .many. Mr. Smith also received presentations from the Otago Cricket Association, the Y.M.C.A., and from citizens of "Dunedin. At the latter presentation, the Mayor of Dunedin referred to the recipient's happy connection with . educational, religious, philanthropic, artistic,. and sporting activities. ....■....-
Mr. L. H. Hcrdmnn, for nine years on the staff of the Christchurch telegraph office, has been transferred to Wellington. Beforu leaving lie was presented with a handsome gold albert and pendant suitably inscribed.

The Eeyl'S. J!. Serpell, who was invited to take charge of the Masterton Methodist Church in place of the Rev. C. E. Porter, resigned, has . accepted, subject to appointment 'by the conference, states a Press Association telegram. ■.
The Palmerstou South District High School has selected Mr. John R. Rutherford, M.A., as headmaster. ..Mr. Rutherford (says a Press Association telegram) is attached to the Wanganui District High School. .
The Rev. J. R. Burgin, appointed to assist Canon M'Jlurray at l St. Mary's Cathedral, Parnell, has arrired in Auckland. He has seen service in Hashonaland and British North Nigeria.
Mr. B. M. Molineaux, manager of the Christchurch branch ot the bank of Xew South Wales, who has. been transferred to Wellington, was entertained by the business community of Christchurch yesterday, and made the recipient of valuable presentations.—Press Association. Mr. E. W. Payton, of the Auckland School of-Art, who has been paying a visit to Masterton, returned to-Wellington en route for his home yesterday. Mr. Arthur C. Major, journalist, : of Masterton, has taken up residence in Hastings, where ho is studying law.
Advice has been received in Dunedin that Dr. Stnn. E. Brown, was* admitted a member of the Roval College of Surjons soon alter his. arrival Home. Ho is now reading for a Fellowship.

The Eev. David. William Runciman, of Auckland, whoso death was announced in yesterday's issue, was born in Glasgow in 1837. After leaving Glasgow High School, Mr. Kunciman want through the University at that town, and then entered tin. office of Messrs. Michaels and Connels, India lea merchants'.. A little later, however, he decided to enter the ministry, of the Presbyterian Church, and was first licensed to preach by the Presbytery of Dunoon. : He was ordained a ininster of the parish church, Leslie, in Fifeshire, by the Presbytery of ' Kirkcaldy in ISGI. Mr. Hunciman laboured with much success iiv this charge until 187(i, when bronchial affection necessitated his removal to a more genial cliirate. He came out to Auckland in 1EG(I. The chango so benefited his health that in 1877 he took charge of the newly-formed congregation at St. Stephen's Church. I'ailing health again compelled Mr. liunciman to resign his charge on June i, 1889, and ho then purchased a small farm nt Paputootoe. Shortly afterwards, Mr. Runciinan was appointed registrar of the Auckland University College, which position ho resigned 13 years afterwards, in 1007, '
