CHURCH OF ENGLAND MEN'S SOCIETY.
A DIOCESAN CONFERENCE. A Diocesan Conference- of the Church of England Men's Society was. held in tho Sydney Street Schoolreoru on_ Saturday evening. ?iinetaen , branches were represented by delegates, and a largo number of clerical and lay members, of Synod were also present.. The Itcv. J. I). Kusscll, in opening the proceedings, announced that Bishop Wallis,had that .day been mado a, member of the society. The Bishop, Oil arrival, was greeted with .sustained applause!, and .in thanking members for their welcome said he looked forward with.very great, hope to the work of the society.
It' having Iwen decided that a Diocrftafi Council should bo elected forthwith, a ballot was taken, and the following wore declared duly elected:— Tht- llsvo. R. 1-1. Hobday. H. G. Blackburno, A. W. Payne, and W. Raino; Messrs. 3. Moore, W. H. Walton, W. K. Southwick, 11. W. Monaghan, liaise, G. Flux, AV. Nash, and C. E. Burdekin. J In; Ho.v. 3. ]). Kussell was appujuted Becretarv.
After discussing at some length the means whereby the society might assist the coming General Jiir,si'on, the meeting turned to a discussion on gambling, and ultimately passed unanimously tho following resolution -.—"That recognising the enormous amount of evil attributable to gambling, also the great increase that has tnlwn place in this form of sin, this conference, representing twenty branches and 420 members, in tho diocese of Wellington, places on record its satisfaction at the efforts that are being made towards its suppression, and pledges itself to uso a>l means to stamp out this form of vice, at Hie same time assuring the various anii-gambling bodies that they will have tho cw-operatiuii and hearty support of the C.E.JLS. in this diocese." Another matter discnssocl was that of establishing a home for lnds. It was agreed:—''Th.'ft tin's conference recognises tho great and urgent need of rosi-uo and preventive work among brivs; that the matter bo referred to the c(!\nicil, and that they be advised to appoint a treasurer."
A vote of thanks was passed to the Hftv. .[. D. Kiiswll for the efficient manner in which he had carried out his duties as diccesm secretary to the. society."
