DEATHS FROM PLAGUE.
Paris, July 8. Three .deaths from plague have, occurred at Tunis. The outbreak of the disease has been traced to rats. SCHOLASTIC APPOINTMENT. London, July 8. Mr. W. 6. Dufficld, a South Australian, has been appointed to a Professorship of Physics at the University College, Reading. CANADA'S NAVAL COLLEGE. Ottawa, July 8. The Naval College at Halifax will bo opened in October next. There are temporary quarters for 30 cadets, but over 200 applications have been received.
DEATH OF A CENTENARIAN.
Melbourne, July 9. William Hanvard, an inmate of the Ballarat Asylum, died at the ago of 107. Ho was one of the early surveyors of Australia.

BUTTER-BOX PROBLEM,
Sydney, July 9. ■Tlic Minister for Agriculture '(Hon. John Perry) states that experiments with Australian soft woods for the purpose of butter-box making are being continued, but, so far the. results have, not been very satisfactory.
