DEATHS FROM PLAGUE.

Paris, July 8. Three .deaths from plague have, occurred at Tunis. The outbreak of the disease has been traced to rats. SCHOLASTIC APPOINTMENT. London, July 8. Mr. W. 6. DEATH OF A CENTENARIAN.

Melbourne, July 9. William Hanvard, an inmate of the Ballarat Asylum, died at the ago of 107. Ho was one of the early surveyors of Australia.

BUTTER-BOX PROBLEM,

Sydney, July 9. ■Tlic Minister for Agriculture '(Hon. John Perry) states that experiments with Australian soft woods for the purpose of butter-box making are being continued, but, so far the. results have, not been very satisfactory.
