AUTHOR AND SCIENTIST DECORATED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Rec. July 10, 5.5 p.m.) London, July 9. Mr. Thomas Hardy, the novelist, and Sir 'William Crookes, the scientist, havo been awarded the Order of Merit.
Mr. Thomas Hardy, the Wesscx novelist and poot, was born in 1840, and began life as an architect. His novel, "Far from the Madding Crowd" (187-J), made him immediately known, and later novels—notably "The Return of the Native" and "Toss of the D'UrberviUes ,, — have given him a unique place among English nrtists in fiction. Jlr. Hardy began to publish verse in IS9B, and in 1904 his elaborate drama of the Napoleonic wars—"The Dynasts." This was completed in 1903.
Sir William Crookes, LL.D., D.Sc, I'.E.S., is one of the most eminent analytical chemists and electricians of the ago. lie is (he discoverer of thallium, the radiometer, and radiant matter; a past president nf the' British Association, the Chemical .Society, and tho Institution of Electrical Engineers; and is a loading member of (lie Psychical I!c----soarcli Society. Sir 'William celebrated his golden weilding in 190 G.
