Mr. Logan, junr., of the Auckland staff of lYackay, Logan, Caldwcll and Co lias been appointed head of a department in Wellington. Mr. Logan, who is an able violinist, should be a. valuablo addition to local musical circles.
Mr Alfred Jordan, draughts champion of England, who has been touruiß Australia will leave Melbourne for Dunec'.m on Wednesday. An effort is being made to arrange for the champion to visit Wellington. Dunedm will bo Mr. Jordan's headquarters m New Zealand.
Sergeant Dougan, ii. charge of the Nelson 'Police Station, who has been transferred to Port Chalmers, armed in Wellington on Saturday evening by the Pateona, and will leave for the youth this evening. Sergeant Dougan has 'boon in Nelson over eight years, and prior to leaving was tlio i recipient of a handsome presentation rrom the Magistrate's Court staff, also an illu-minated-'addrcss and suitable gifts from tho Anglers' Club, of which he was a promiiK'i.t iticmbjr. Mr. John Angiistino -Qninn was admitted on Saturday to practice as a solicitor of tho hupreme Court. On behalf of tho applicant Mr. C. P. Skca-ratt, K.C., appeared before his Honour the Chief-Jus-tice (Sir Kolirrt Stout), wiio wished Mr. Quinn sv.ccoss in the pmiession.
Captain Kynard Hawdon, whose death from cholera in India was reported by cable en Friday, was the iTrandscin" of the lato Dr Barker, intimately associated with the early history of' Christchurch. His mother, who was the daughter of Dr. Barker, was the first n-hito child born on the Canterbury Plains.
One of the few surviving Canterbury "pilgrims"' passed away on Friday evenin" in Mr. Thomas Kent, who arrived in%-ttelton in ISSO in tho Crossy, oro of the first four ships.
