Among those who will take part will bo Miirphy (middleweight champion) and Tracy. The big American contest has undoubtedly quickened loci.l interest in pugilism. The-ro is E.ii abundance of winter feed for stock in tho Wairafapa, anil although tho distrust liaS texn visited by several cold snaps of Into, stock generally is in good condition. The annual Mission in connection with the Congregational •Church wns opened last evening, when the Ilev. A. M. Aapland preached, his subject boin.i', '"The Supreme Need of the Church." The Waipoua, and Waingawii Ilivcrs were in a high state of flood yesterdny, and much low-lymg country 'fras inundated. No loss of stock is so far reported. The result of the Johnson-Jeffries fight, which -camn to hand this morning, was not received with a great deal of surprise. At a meeting of the committee of the Masterton Homing Pigeon Club last evening final arrangements wojo mm'lo for a smoke concert to be held on Monday evoning. A vote of condolence with tho president, Mr. J. Paytrai, jun., touching the deatli of his fari'dier, was unanimously passed. Tho Masterton Parliamentary Union had a very exciting sitting ilast evening, when the Sykos "Ministrjf" was defeated on the proposal in its Land Bill to give Crown tenants tho rfight of acquiring tho freehold at thje original Value. It is probablo that the "Opposition" will be called upd&i to form a now "Ministry." 'The Miign of the Sykos "Ministry" has been.- short and sweet. At a meeting of the Masborton Vctoran Eire ISrigado Association i last evening, Superintendent T. Jqnkins presided over an attendance of. twenty-five members. Five new members were proposed, and twelve elected. • A debate took place upon the best method of dealing with a fire should dne occur in the business portion of tho town, and this proved very interesting. At the next mooting a debate will take place upon the question of whether the time lias arrived for tho improve; inent of'tho firo service- in Masterton. The friends of Mr. Allan- Cameron, a Well-known settler of this ijlistrict, have learned with regret that ail' injury toJiis leg has compelled him to go into a private hospital in Wellington. Miss M'Calmont, tho popular postmistress at Lower Taueru, > who has lieen transferred to Alfrcdtoh, has been presented by tho residents of tho Taueru with a handsome gold wafxih and chain as a memento of their esteem.
