ROSE AND CARNATION CLUB.
The annual met;l.ing t of the. Wellington Kose and Carnation Club was held at G-ulber's Rooms last evening, Jlr. H. A. Pox pMsidiiiij over a good attendance. Tho animal report, which was read and adopted,, stated inter alia, that it was doubtful if any spring show had proved quite so successful ius that held in November lust. The attendance of- the public showed a considerable increase on that of tilt .November .iliov ol IiICS. Ones again the lady members and i.lieir friends lent their valuable aid in general mailers anil especially in dispensing tea to visitors. Tne summer show was held in January. The committee were :niigulnti of having one of the best showings of bloonu yet seen al any summer slum"of the club. .Members hardly needed to.bo reminded of the heavy gales happening a. few days previously. With so little prospect of getting a satisfactory exhibition tho t|ucntii..n of abandoniiiL' was discussed; notwithstanding, the ..result was that although roses and carnations were much below the usual standard sweet, peas made up this deficiency, and a successful # day resulted. During tho year lady members contributed a handsome trophy in the shapu of a silver tea service. This was won by Mrs. Gore,, who holds it for one year. At the summer show Alt'. C. Trevethick won the sweet pea trophy, and by so doing it becomes his own property. In future it has been decided that tho spring show of the club shall be held on the third Wednesday in November in each yoai. tt lus been ;li» cided to hold the summer show on December 14, instead of in January as formerly. The financial statement showed a credit- balance of £U lis. 9d. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:—Patron, Lord Islington; president, Mr. C. YV. Tring-. ham; vice-presidents, Mesdames Tuckey, Samuel, and Gore, Messrs. A. Laurcnson, H. A. Pox, Major Davey, G. Remington, and W; Bourke; committee, Messrs. W. A. Head, J. S. Lord, P. Gale, W. J. Thompson, A. Richards, I\ Ralley, and IT. Baillie; treasurer, Mr. .G. Jeffery; auditor, Mr. C. H. Matthews; secretary, Mr. W. G. Talbot. It was. resolved, .on the motion' of Mr. Fox, that the financial year of the club shall close on February 28 in each year, and that the annua! general meeting shall be held not later than April 30. It was decided to alter the definition of an amateur to read as follows.: —'.'Any person who is not a professional gardener, or employed in that capacity, or who does not sell pla.nts, seeds, or flowers. An amateur may employ assistance'in his or her garden, and still be eligible to compete in any class." At the conclusion of the ordinary business, Mv. C. Trevethick, of Lower Hntt, read an interesting paper on "Rose Culture," and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
