A MUNICIPAL ORCHESTRA.
guarantees' forthcoming. • Mr. J. ,Maughan Barnett's proposal to establish a municipal orchestra in Wellington has created quite a favourable impression amongst those interested in promoting good music in Wellington. The lack of a really good orchestra to interpret the classical writers has long been felt here, and both musicians and that section of tho public interested look forward with pleasurable anticipation to the development of tho scheme. Mr. Harnett is not asking tie City Council to bear any burden worth mentioning, ; and at tho outset ia relying to some extent on guarantees from the public. So far he has not received a refusal, and quite a nice little sum has been assured already, for tho prosecution of the enterprise. Mr. Barnett hopes that, in time, the orchestra will ;bo able to meet its obligations without seeking aid from the city treasury.
