ALLEGED "LIGHTHOUSE" RAID.
THE CAEGO SEIZED. Yesterday Sergeant Rutledge and Constable M'Kelvie raided an alleged Wellington "lighthouse," and, it is stated, seized a quantity of liquor. Prosecution will follow. A "lighthouse" in a certain sense of the word is of a particular kind, which, unlike tho lighthouse by the sea, shines not only at night, but also in the day time, and attains exceptional brilliance on Simdays. They are portable concerns, with an especial attraction for thirsty men, prohibited men, and police constables. Tho institutions are usually extra provisioned on Saturday nights, for Sunday morning is a time when much wreckage and many crows drift ashore. The police, who take considerable interest in "lighthouses," think that there are more of thorn in the vicinities of Courtenay Place and Taranaki Street than in any other part of Wellington. A "lighthouse," in short, is a man whoso occupation is to provido himself with bottles of beer 6towed nut of veiw about his person, and then frequent certain'localities with tho object of disposing of his cargo, or any portion thereof, to whosoever desires to purchase. Whether tho gross turnover is largo or is small is a matter known to tho 'lighthouse" alone; but tho profit per cent, is considerable. Draught beer is bought for sixpence a bottle, and "liglvthoused" at two shillings for the same quantity. A good many aro at present engaged in tho btisinc&s, and the police state that they are going out on the. warpath to reduco tho number. I
