TOO RICH AND TOO POOR.
WOULD-BE SETTLER'S TRIALS. A sturdy working man waited upon tho Wellington Land Board at its last meeting and applied for a land for settlement section. Ho was somewhat indignant when, after being questioned, he was declared not to have tho necessary means to work tho land. The Commissioner (Mr. James Mackenzie) explained that when the State had bought a farm lor a 'man tho board had to seo that ho had thecapital to carry ou, so that tho Crown would at least got interest on its expenditure. The applicant quickly replied that, having come to this country with some means, he had applied some eighteen months or two years ago for an improved farm holding. On that occasion ho was informed that ho was too rich to take up that class of country. Now that ho had spent all his money in supporting his family and in trying to get land he was told ho was too poor. The-Commissioner said he thoroughly sympathised with him, and would be glad to explain the many different forms of land tenure to him after the meeting. Eventually tho board, considering that the applicant appeared to be a man of grit, decided to give him a chance on the holding he desired,'especially as the land was lying idle and there were no other applicants for it.
