MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
, (Before Mr* W. G. Riddell, S.M.) "HELPING A FRIEND." . Wallace M'Guiro pleaded not guilty to having used threatening behaviour whereby a breach of the peaco was occasioned. Evidence was given' by the police to the effect that defendant and some other men were standing under a verandah at 10.10 on Saturday night drinking from a bottle of beer. The party were making a good deal of noise and were also blocking the footpath, su a constable stepped in. The men all went away with the exception of, accused who defied the policeman and challenged him to remove him at the risk of being "stood on his head." The constable closed with defendant, and icventually lodged him' in the . lock-up. Defendant stated that ho had seen s a man whom he worked with drinking under the verandah, and he went over to warn him to go home. Just as ho arrived alongside his friend tho policeman came up. 'lis Worship held that evidence was against defendant who would be convicted and fined 405., in default seven days' imprisonment. TROUBLE IN TORY STREET. Thomas Albert Twiss, appeared with a much bandaged head and pleaded guilty to having, on June 19, wiltully damaged a window, value 125., and a curtain, value 15s„ the property af one John Armstrong. Sub-Inspector Norwood informed the Court' that, at 3 a.m. on Sunday, a constable heard cries for help in Tory Street, and on arriving at the spot whence the cries came, he found accused tied with -a rope' and held down by two men. Accused had gone to a certain house and demanded admission.' When lie was refused entry lie smashed the window, and damaged the curtain. A conviction and fine of 40s. and costs Bs. was entered and accused was ordered to make good the damage done. The default was fixed at 14 days' imprisonment. "COMMENT" ON A CONSTABLE. .4 plea of guilty was entered by deorge Henry Symons to a charge of having used obscene language in Taranaki Street. It was explained that defendant had followed a constable, who . had arrested another man, and used the language in the comment he hurled at the constable.. A conviction and fine of .£3 and costs 8s„ in default 14 days' imprisonment was entered. BY-LAW CASES. Joseph Osborno was fined 10s. and costs 7s. for driving a vehicle around the corner of Charles Street -and Lambton Quay at other than a walking pace. A fine of ss. and costs 7s. was entered against Wm. Arthur Rowse for allowing his horso to wander on a public street.' For leaving a vehicle unattended in Adelaide Road and not locking the wheel, Eli Shaw was fined 10s. and costs 7s. OTHER MATTERS. George Garstein was ordered to pay 4s. per week towards tho maintenance, of his child, an inmate of St. Joseph's Orphanage. A prohibition order, to have twelve months' currency in the Wellington and Hutt licensing districts, was issued against Laura Fanny Garner. One first offender for drunkenness was fined 10s., and another was convicted and discharged.
