W. Young will ride Aotea in the hurdltf race at Napier Park on Wednesday. .Savior left Trentham for Napier yesterday morning. He will be ridden itt his engagements by T. Pritchard. Mr. Lan Duncan received a telephone message from Waiianao yesterday stating that the Birkenhead—Parity yearling had' suet with fatal injuries through colliding with a post. ■ Waiata and Mahinga were to leaver" Auckland for Sydney by the l»st evening. Mr. W. E. Bidwill has entered A.vo«a» tion (Birkenhead —Stcpfeldt) for the Ros&. hill Guineas of 1911. Master Stead, w;ho is entered for the nack hurdle events at the Wellington Racing Club's meeting, is said to have shown great promise in his sohooling efforts, and will probably lie a candidate for Grand National honours later on. He is a bay gelding by San Rerno from Miss Ituby. T. Pritchard has been offered the mounts on to Beau and Explosive at tho Napier Park meeting. The injuries -received by, J. Jones when schooling Explosive at Ellerslio. last Tuesday morning turn out to be more serious than was at first anticipated, and it transpires that the shoulder is broken. The mishap will keep Jones out of the saddlo ioi "some months. Irariui and Effort did not leave fot Sydney on Friday. The three thoroughbreds shipped by J. Lowe were Artillerie, Dixie. Girl, and the Sir-Laddo —Orchestra ' colt. .On arrival at Sydney to-day they go into . J. Whitworth's stable. ; White Lie has been creating some excitement at Trentham in a schooling effort over hurdles. Recently- 1 it was decided to' test her jumping capabilities, and her trainer decided to mount a hack to give her a "lead" over the fences. The hack cltarcd the first fence in good style, and White Lie followed suit satisfactorily, bnt the Merriwee maro had too much pace for her schooling companion and was alongside of him beforo the next fence was reached.- Just as they approached the jump White. Lie caimoned . into the hack, knocked him over, and then laid tho hurdle flat. Her trainer was, considerably bruised and: shaken as a result of tho mishap, and the schooling lessons have been postponed indefK nitely. \

THE NEW TELEGRAM FORMS. AUCKLAND APPRECIATION. Auckland, June 20, To-day was the first day on which thj new- telegram form was used here, ana business men emphatically pronounce it to be a great improvement upon the old system. Some persons, however, who re« ceived telegrams to-day, instead of breaking the seal of.the form, ripped it open'at the side like an envelope, \nth the result that the form .was mutilated. There is a stock of some three thousand of the new forms, and, when this is finished, a newer form still will be used. This will have gammed edges, thus doing away witli the necessity for the eeal. £800 COMPENSATION. Dunedin, June 20. In Smith v. the Dunedin Corporation, a claim for £1650 for land taken for street-widening purposes, the Compensation Court awarded XSOO without costs. A COLD SNAP. Ashburtori, June 20. PAPAROA MINERS'STRIKE. . . . Greymouth, June 20. The Blackball correspondent of .thfl Grey River "Argus" wired late to-night that the Paparoa miners had come out on strike. Sir. Semple arrived in the evening, and will make inquiries into tho matter of the dispute. Several, reasons are given, and an inquiry will take place, SUFFERING FROM INSOMNIA. .. Auckland,. June 20. Fears are entertained for the safety of Henry Smith, a man 71 years old, who resided with his ' sons at Ponsonby, Smith has been suffering severely from insomnia, and had been in a private hospital. He left' the hospital, this afternoon, *and lator the police found an umbrella' which has been identified by a son as Mr. Smith's. It is proposed to drag in tho vicinity of the wharf to> morrow. ' RUN OVER BY A TRAIN. Napier, June 20. A young man, named John Cotterill, residing at Clive, was seriously injured at Hastings Eailway Station to-night. He was evidently run over by a train, but no one saw the accident happen. He was brought in to Napier Hospital, where it was found necessary to" amputate hia right arm. His right leg was.also badly lacerated, and his condition is critical. ■ FIRE. Wanganui, June 20. A fire' occurred at Aramoho.about ten o'clock to-night and totally destroyed an eight-roomed house owned by the Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., and occupied by Mr. James West, butcher. The furniture was insured for ,£IOO, and the piano, for <£50, in the Commercial Union. The insurance on the house is not at present obtainable. ,
